Starting Our Camping Adventure

Our Adventure began from our Cape Town hotel.  This is the view from our room.
Cloud Rolling Over Table Mountain

We met our travel companions and the truck that is to be our home in Cape Town and started our adventure.  That is after the shark excitement on our first full day (What a way to start.  If the trip is half as exciting as the sharks we are going to have a fantastic time)
Camping our first night

Little did we know that the pace of the trip was going to pick up and fast.  Our typical day starts with a wake up around 5:00 with us being on the road by 6:00.  We then drive an average 6 hours with stops along to the way to check out things. The roads are mainly dirt and we travel fast.  It is definitely a kidney shaker.
View out the truck window.

We stop along the way and do hikes and see the sites.
Dan getting stuck in a rock pipe.
Look closely, those dots are us climbing down the hill.

Our camp site as we entered the desert.  We had to shoo away the ostrich that was on our site.
Unloading the truck to get ready for dinner.

Our tent and the view.

After dinner we usually go on a night walk.  At this campground we went looking for scorpions.  We all wanted to know what they looked like since they commonly will go under the tents at night to keep warm and when we are packing up in the early morning dark we have to be sure we don't get stung.  Below is a picture of a scorpion.  They glow with a black light and it is usually the only way to see them unless you step on or close to them.

This is Fish River Canyon, one of the stops along the way.  It is second only to the Grand Canyon in size but is the oldest.

On the edge of the world

Some of the camp sites are in the middle of nowhere.  At this place the only way you knew there was a driveway was the pair of shoes hanging on a stick at the edge of the main road.  At this site there were a herd of zebra that galloped past the tents around 1:30 in the morning on their way to the watering hole.  Sorry no photos.  The animal pictures will come in the next blog.
Hanging out with a few drinks before dinner.

Crossing the Tropic of Capricorn Line

We are having a lot of fun.  The group we are travelling with is fantastic and all 20 of us are getting along fine.  Lisa and I are not the oldest in the group as the ages range from 18 to late 60's.  People are from around the world (Germany, Australia, US, Norway, Switzerland and England with 1/3 being Canadian).
We will try and blog some of the adventures we have had some good, some scary and some a little painful.  We will also put an animal blog together.  We have seen quite a few and we are just starting to get into the big animal areas.
Right now we are in Swakopmund, Namibia and will be going off grid again for another 5 days as we head back into the desert before heading into Botswana.
